ENRON COMMUNICATIONS, INC. ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION OF NEW LONG-HAUL FIBER BUILD

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, October 21, 1998

PORTLAND, Ore. – Enron Communications, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Enron Corp., announced today that it has begun construction on a long-haul fiber-optic route that will span from Salt Lake City to Houston.

The route will add 2,300 route miles to Enron Communications’ existing 3,400-mile backbone network and will connect through Denver, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio. The extension is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 1999. The sale of a portion of the fiber on this new route will offset construction costs.

“Enron Communications is selectively pursuing opportunities to leverage its existing asset presence and skills,” said Joe Hirko, CEO of Enron Communications. “This additional link will advance our effort to create a national fiber optic network. Through a combination of construction and fiber sales and exchanges, we will be able to move quickly and economically to complete our national network.”

Enron Corp. is one of the world’s leading integrated natural gas and electricity companies. The company, which owns approximately $28 billion in assets, produces electricity and natural gas, develops, constructs and operates energy and water facilities worldwide and delivers physical commodities and risk management and financial services to customers around the world. Enron’s Internet address is www.enron.com and the stock is traded under the ticker symbol, “ENE.”
