Frontier Communications Announces Network Capacity Swap With Enron Communications, Inc.
Bandwidth Exchange Affords Companies Greater Network Efficiencies
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December. 2, 1998
ROCHESTER, N.Y. --(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Frontier Communications announced today a long-term network capacity
swap with Enron Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Enron
Corp. (NYSE:ENE).
Frontier will utilize capacity on the Enron Communications Pure IPsm
(Internet Protocol) network, creating two additional rings and
multi-window redundant routes in the western half of the United States by
June 1999. The additional routes will enhance Frontier's network
reliability in major cities including Los Angeles; Las Vegas; Salt Lake
City; Portland, Ore.; and Seattle.
"As the data and bandwidth needs of our customers continue to rise, we
are increasing the coverage of our Optronics network to support this
growth," said Russ Shipley, vice president of network planning and
development for Frontier. "This capacity exchange enhances the
scalability of our network system, and expands our service capabilities in
new and existing markets."
As part of the exchange, Enron Communications will obtain rights to
capacity on the Frontier Optronics Networksm, connecting major U.S.
cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Dallas and
Washington D.C.
"This unique exchange leverages Enron Communications' existing
network assets to expand its reach to more than 15,000 miles and
provide national Pure IPsm connectivity," said Joe Hirko, CEO, Enron
Communications, Inc. "This is the strategic next step in our deployment
of a national Pure IPsm network."
Enron Communications is currently constructing a long-haul, fiber optic
network route from Salt Lake City to Houston, in addition to its existing
backbone connecting Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles and
San Francisco.
Connecting more than 120 markets in the United States, the Frontier
Optronics Network uses the most advanced fiber optics with Dense
Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) creating "liquid bandwidth," a
scalable design that gives the network virtually unlimited capacity on
demand. Such capacity can service any or multiple applications
customers may deploy to support their business goals, now and well into
the future.
