ENRON COMMUNICATIONS INTRODUCES ENRON INTELLIGENT NETWORK TO DELIVER HIGH BIT RATE APPLICATIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, January 21, 1999

PORTLAND, Ore. - Enron Communications, Inc., introduced today the Enron Intelligent Network (EIN), an application delivery platform enabled with intelligent messaging software that will enhance the company’s existing Pure IP fiber-optic network to create next generation applications services. The EIN brings to market a reliable, bandwidth-on-demand platform for delivering data, applications and streaming rich media to the desktop.

The Enron Intelligent Network architecture is based on a unique approach to networking through distributed servers, Enron InterAgent® middleware and Enron Communications’ Pure IPsm technology. The network intelligence comes from Enron’s standards-based InterAgent technology, a real-time intelligent messaging technology that supports the development and maintenance of distributed applications across network environments.

“We are deploying the Enron Intelligent Network to create a new model of IP-capable services to bridge the gap between low-cost, low-quality Internet services and high-cost,

high-quality dedicated circuit networks,” said Joe Hirko, president and CEO of Enron Communications. “We are implementing our patented core technology – the Enron InterAgent automated network control system – that will allow customers to access on-the-fly capacity, tiered quality of service, data, application and content capabilities purchased entirely on an as-used basis.”

InterAgent brings a number of advanced messaging features including fault tolerance, load balancing, quality-of-service message delivery, and cross-language interoperability that ensures messages are routed reliably and efficiently throughout the EIN. It is a patented property-based routing methodology that provides a robust and scalable architecture for providing network-based multimedia applications. Such a unique network architecture enables the efficient delivery of data, streaming multimedia, and other applications not previously possible to the desktops of Internet users.

“We have designed the EIN to meet the current and emerging needs of enterprise customers who must rely on their networks to implement competitive digital strategies,” Hirko said. “The EIN, with its revolutionary architecture, is enabling a whole new breed of powerful solutions that are currently not available due to quality and cost constraints. We aim to remove these barriers and unleash the power of the desktop by enabling next generation broadband applications.”
