ENRON HOSTS STATEWIDE EARTH DAY ’99 WITH CALIFORNIA STATE PARKS FOUNDATION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, April 23, 1999

SAN FRANCISCO - For the second year in a row, Enron has teamed with the California State Parks Foundation to host the nation’s only statewide Earth Day on Saturday, April 24, 1999. Earth Day ’99 activities are designed to encourage everyday actions to conserve and protect our earth’s resources.

“Earth Day ’99 in California is an impressive and inspiring example of how individuals, businesses, environmental agencies and communities can join together to restore and protect our natural resources,” said Kenneth L. Lay, chairman and CEO of Enron. “A clean environment is essential not only to the quality of life in our communities, but also to continued economic growth. Enron is committed to helping protect our environment through a variety of means, including increasing awareness through Earth Day activities like these in California and by continuing to serve as one of the world’s largest providers of clean natural gas.”

Enron has granted $125,000 to the California State Parks Foundation for Earth Day Work Day projects at state parks, communities and schools in 29 California counties. The Foundation’s Earth Day ’99 Restoration and Cleanup differs from most Earth Day activities around the nation because it focuses on creating a day of action -- engaging people in volunteer activities and linking them with environmental organizations that they may wish to support year-round.

More than 200 Enron employees from around the state will roll up their sleeves to participate in the activities, which will focus on a beach cleanup and restoration effort at Huntington State Beach, and on a clean-up, trail maintenance and native grass planting at Mt. Diablo State Park.

Other key grants provided by Enron will fund restoration work on impacted land and an expansion of the community garden at Candlestick Point State Recreation Area in San Francisco; an underwater cleanup effort involving scuba divers at Refugio State Beach in Santa Barbara County; planting a native habitat at Strawberry Creek Watershed in Berkeley; creation of a flower garden at McKinley Avenue Elementary School in Los Angeles; conducting clean-up, restoration and planting at Will Rogers State Historic Park in Los Angeles; rerouting the Carmelo Meadow Trail and building a bridge across Vernal Creek at Point Lobos State Reserve in Monterey County; restoration and cleanup at Mormon Island Wetlands Nature Preserve in Folsom; removal of exotic species and planting of native plants at Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in San Diego County; trail restoration at Torrey Pines State Reserve in San Diego County; and maintenance and rehabilitation to improve trail access and park facilities at Coyote Hills Regional Park in Alameda County.

Enron supports Earth Day projects in other communities around the United States, including Portland, Ore., and Houston.
