Press Release

SHEVARDNADZE TO RECEIVE ENRON PRIZE FOR DISTINGUISHED PUBLIC SERVICE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, April 15, 1999

Houston – Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze will receive the 1999 Enron Prize for Distinguished Public Service on April 22, 1999 at an event sponsored by Rice University’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy. The event is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 22 in Stude Concert Hall’s Alice Pratt Brown Hall on the Rice University campus. Shevardnadze will join former U.S. Secretary of State, James A. Baker III for a “town hall” meeting to reflect on historic events that brought about a peaceful end to the cold war nearly 10 years ago.

The Enron Prize is an award given to recognize outstanding individuals for their contributions to public service. President Shevardnadze is the third beneficiary of the Enron Prize. Past recipients include retired U.S. General Colin Powell (1995) and former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev (1997).

President Shevardnadze had a significant impact on bringing the cold war to an end as foreign minister of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1990, acting as a leader for democratic reform movements. He directed the policies that led to the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Afghanistan, the reduction of nuclear arms, the independence of the countries of East and Central Europe and the reunification of Germany. In 1992, Shevardnadze was asked to return to his native country of Georgia amid political, social and economic unrest to help restore peace and democracy. Shevardnadze was elected president of Georgia in 1995. He has since launched democratic and economic reforms that restored political stability, economic growth and increased cooperation throughout the region.

“President Shevardnadze epitomizes the ideals upon which the Enron Prize for Distinguished Public Service was established,” said Kenneth L. Lay, chairman and CEO of Enron Corp. “His unrelenting commitment to peace and democracy in Georgia and the former Soviet Union makes him the model recipient of the 1999 Enron Prize.”

Secretary Baker and Mr. Lay will present the Enron Prize to the Georgian President immediately following the “town hall” meeting.
