FLORIDA GAS TRANSMISSION COMPANY ANNOUNCES FIRM COMMITMENTS FOR PHASE V EXPANSION
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, June 28, 1999
HOUSTON – Florida Gas Transmission Company (FGT) announced today that Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Gulf Power Company, a Southern Company subsidiary, have made firm commitments to participate in FGT’s Phase V expansion.
FPL plans to repower the Sanford power plant in Volusia County, Fla., with natural gas technology to double the generating capacity of its existing facility. These deliveries to FPL are an expansion of current natural gas deliveries to the plant. Gulf Power plans to build a new gas-fired combined-cycle generation unit at its existing Lansing Smith generation facility near Panama City, Fla., in Bay County.
“We’re pleased to expand our natural gas deliveries to FPL, our largest customer, and to build a new relationship with Gulf Power,” said Rockford G. Meyer, president of FGT. “These commitments reaffirm FGT’s ability to expand our existing pipeline infrastructure in Florida to meet the needs of our customers. As we finalize negotiations with additional customers, we will continue to meet the growing natural gas needs in the state through incremental expansions.
“The community dialogue efforts initiated during our Phase IV expansion will continue so we can understand the needs and concerns of the community as we move forward with this project. With a 40-year history in the state of Florida, we want to build on our relationships with the community and customers well into the future,” Meyer added.
The Phase V expansion will cost approximately $250 million and is expected to be in-service by the second quarter of 2002. FGT plans to file the project application later this year with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
As previously announced, FGT’s $350 million proposed Phase IV expansion, filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission last December, is expected to be in service by May 2001. For the Phase IV expansion, eight shippers executed 20-year firm commitments for 272,000 MMBtu/d of incremental firm service, net of turn-back capacity.
Florida Gas Transmission, a wholly owned subsidiary of Citrus Corp., operates an approximately 5,000-mile interstate natural gas transmission system from South Texas to South Florida.
