ENRON NAMED ONE OF “100 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR IN AMERICA”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, December 21, 1999

HOUSTON – Enron was named today one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For in America” by Fortune magazine. Climbing to number 24 from number 73 last year, Enron is the highest ranking global energy company on the list.

“Our corporate culture and our world-class employees make Enron a great place to work,” said Kenneth L. Lay, Enron chairman and CEO. “We are proud to receive recognition as a top workplace; it’s a reflection of our commitment to our employees and to their key role in our company’s success.”

The Fortune survey is based primarily on feedback from employees, who were randomly selected to fill out a 57-question survey developed by The Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco. The remaining part of Fortune’s scoring was based on a culture audit and a detailed human resources questionnaire.

In Enron’s designation on the list, Fortune noted that women comprise nearly one-third of upper management. Employee benefits include stock options, an on-site fitness center and doctor’s office, health benefits for domestic partners, concierge services, lactation rooms, all-day summer camp for employees’ children, subsidized public transportation, tuition reimbursement, and flexible work schedules. In addition, Enron spends a significant amount annually on training technology and systems and has a matching charitable gift program of up to $15,000 per employee.

Enron adds the “100 Best Companies to Work For in America” distinction to its “Most Innovative Company in America” accolade, which it has received from Fortune magazine for the past four years.

Enron is one of the world’s leading electricity, natural gas and communications companies. The company, which owns approximately $34 billion in energy and communications assets, produces electricity and natural gas, develops, constructs and operates energy facilities worldwide, delivers physical commodities and financial and risk management services to customers around the world, and is developing an intelligent network platform to facilitate online business. The stock is traded under the ticker symbol, “ENE.”
