FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, October 21, 1999
Houston– The Baker Institute will present the Enron Prize for Distinguished Public Service to Nelson Mandela on Oct. 26, 1999 at Rice University. The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in Autry Court on the Rice University campus. Mandela will be accompanied by Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Saudi Arabian ambassador to the United States, and will join former U.S. Secretary of State James A. Baker III, Enron Chairman and CEO Kenneth L. Lay, Rice University President Malcolm Gillis, and Chairman of the Rice University Board of Trustees William Barnett. Mandela will deliver his keynote address to local high school and college students at the public assembly.
The Baker Institute’s Enron Prize is an award given to recognize outstanding individuals for their contributions to public service. Mandela is the fourth recipient of the Enron Prize. Past recipients include retired U.S. General Colin Powell, former Soviet Union President Mikhail Gorbachev and Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze.
Nelson Mandela was inaugurated as the first black president of South Africa in 1994 and served his country until June 1999. Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for his lifelong commitment to dismantling apartheid.
“Nelson Mandela epitomizes the ideals upon which the Enron Prize for Distinguished Public Service was established,” said Lay. “His unrelenting commitment to peace and his staunch stand against racism make him a model recipient of the Enron Prize.”
Seating for the public assembly is on a first-come basis. No handbags or backpacks will be allowed in the gymnasium due to security concerns.
