ENRON STREAMS LIVE WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIP COVERAGE
OVER THE ENRON INTELLIGENT NETWORK
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, June 29, 2000
HOUSTON -- Enron Broadband Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of Enron Corp., announced today that it is providing live webcast coverage of the Wimbledon Championships. The coverage is made possible by an alliance between Enron and the All England Lawn Tennis Club and is carried via the Enron Intelligent Network for viewing on the Wimbledon Channel, the studio presentation section of the official Wimbledon website hosted by IBM (www.wimbledon.com).
The online coverage features streaming video of player interviews, press conferences, daily highlights and tennis news, and still-frame images from courtside match play. Coverage is being delivered to desktop audiences internationally during the Wimbledon tournament, from June 26 to July 9, at speeds up to 100 kbps. To date, the Wimbledon Channel has served more than 49,000 streams to viewers in 81 countries.
“Enron is pleased to play a key role in combining leading edge technology for streaming video on the Internet with the time-honored tradition of the Wimbledon Championship tournament,” said Kenneth Rice, chief commercial officer of Enron Broadband Services. “The continued growth of broadband accessibility is enhancing the experience for more and more desktop viewers to take part in events such as Wimbledon.”
The Enron Intelligent Network is optimized for the broadband delivery of rich media content and bypasses the congestion of the Internet, providing television quality audio and video faster than the public Internet. Enron’s server architecture, embedded streaming media application and intelligent operating system provide the scalability and quality of service (QoS) levels required to stream large scale live events.
