ENRON COMMUNICATIONS ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT WITH AVICI SYSTEMS, INC.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, January 6, 2000
HOUSTON - Enron Communications, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Enron Corp. and a leader in the delivery of high-bandwidth application services, announced today it has invested in Avici Systems, Inc., a leader in terabit switch routing, and upon successful testing will integrate Avici’s Terabit Switch/Routers (TSR®) into the Enron Intelligent Network to create one of the world’s fastest IP based networks.
“Forecasted customer demand and on-demand provisioning for Enron’s ePowered applications requires new levels of IP switching capacity,” said John Griebling, vice president of Enron’s Network Engineering and Operations.
The Enron Intelligent Network will be capable of operating at 40 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is four times faster than the benchmark OC-192 speed. The enhanced performance will provide Enron’s ISP and CLEC distribution partners with a new level of bandwidth-on-demand not available from other network providers.
“We are building one of the world’s most advanced fiber optic networks to meet the growing demand for bandwidth-intensive e-business communications,” said Griebling. “Our investment in Avici advances our vision because Avici is one of the only companies with the routing technology powerful enough to move data at the speed we need within the infrastructure of our existing network.”
Upon deployment of Avici’s advanced Terabit Switch/Routers (TSR), Enron will be able to exceed the OC-192 benchmark speed of competing networks by leveraging its existing OC-48 assets.
“We are very pleased to be working with Enron Communications to build a true 'speed of light' network,” said Surya Panditi, president and CEO of Avici. “The combination of the Enron Intelligent Network and the scalability of our TSR clearly positions Enron as the leading supplier of bandwidth-on-demand in the new Internet economy.”
