ENRON ACQUIRES WARPSPEED COMMUNICATIONS
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, May 15, 2000
HOUSTON -- Enron Broadband Services, Inc. (EBS), a wholly owned subsidiary of Enron Corp., announced today the acquisition of WarpSpeed Communications, a leading provider of on-demand switched connectivity to business enterprises.
The acquisition enhances Enron’s Broadband Operating System (BOS), the software intelligence and controls that reside on Enron’s fiber optic network. The BOS provides the basis for wide-spread delivery of high quality of service (QOS) broadband content and bandwidth trading. Incorporating WarpSpeed’s MetaRouter™ software into the BOS increases the speed and efficiency of switching between broadband networks and controlling the routing of data over networks. This will allow for real-time bandwidth trading in scalable increments, and for dynamically adjusting the underlying bandwidth capacity to support broadband content delivery.
MetaRouter sends signals throughout distributed networks to determine the optimal connectivity paths for any size bandwidth capacity from anywhere in the world. Capable of processing thousands of connections per second, MetaRouter significantly enhances Enron’s ability to automate circuit provisioning.
“This acquisition represents the continued evolution of broadband connectivity,” said Joe Hirko, CEO of Enron Broadband Services. “With the rapid growth in broadband access, end-to-end connectivity management becomes critical. The architecture of the WarpSpeed technology is fully scalable and can be applied to any type of hardware, which will allow EBS to continuously adapt to new products in the market and stay at the forefront of the industry.”
The WarpSpeed acquisition is being made within Enron Broadband Services’ current capital expenditures and financial plan. WarpSpeed, a Pleasanton, Calif.-based company comprised of 55 employees, now operates as a division of Enron Broadband Services. EBS will continue to serve WarpSpeed’s existing client base of business enterprise and telecom carriers with its on-demand T-1 service.
