We all know that philanthropy is important to the community.
But how do students learn about what their community needs
and the importance of giving? Enron's Community 101
provides one way to teach them.
This program provides high school classes a modest fund
that allows them to create their own philanthropic foundation.
The students determine which causes in their community merit
support. By becoming part of the process and making positive
contributions, the students gain hands-on experience in the
reality of social responsibility and the value of giving.
Piloted in Portland, Oregon, Community 101 is now offered
in Houston and expanding to other communities Enron serves.
The 1999 Community 101 grant recipients are The Center for the Retarded,
Inc., Interfaith Ministries for Greater Houston, and the Sickle Cell
Association of the Texas Gulf Coast.
