Press Release

ENRON TEAMS UP WITH THE DOWNTOWN YMCA TO SPONSOR HOUSTON’S LARGEST FUN RUN

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, October 22, 1996

HOUSTON -- Enron announced today that it will sponsor the Jingle Bell Run, one of the highlights of the Houston Holiday Season, and a benefit for the Downtown YMCA.

Named the 1996 Enron Jingle Bell Run, this year’s event will be held on Sunday, December 15, and is expected to attract more than 10,000 participants. The event will raise funds for the Downtown YMCA’s inner-city youth programs. To increase participation and make this year’s event more enjoyable for runners, walkers, in-line skaters and wheel-chair entrants, the race will include live entertainment along the route provided by local performers, sports celebrity appearances, prizes for best costumes, and live bands. Enron also will provide participants a large, colorful gymbag and a kid’s back pack.

“Enron’s partnership with the Houston community is a top priority,” said Kenneth L. Lay, chairman and CEO of Enron. “The Enron Jingle Bell Run is one of the city’s most exciting holiday events because it brings many people together and supports the Downtown YMCA, which helps many underprivileged inner-city families.”

“With the help of Enron, our goal is to provide recreational activities for the community and help expand the reach of the Downtown YMCA’s youth and urban services programs,” said Dave Simpson, executive director of the Downtown YMCA. “Proceeds from the 1996 Enron Jingle Bell Run support the YMCA’s safe after-school programs for latch-key children, summer camps for underprivileged kids and teen leadership programs for older at-risk youth and others.”

The 1996 Enron Jingle Bell Run will kick-off at 2:00 p.m. on Louisiana and Bell streets in front of the Downtown YMCA and the Enron building. The non-competitive event features a children’s one-mile run, five-mile wheelchair race, 3.2-mile in-line skating event, five-mile adult run and a 3.2-mile family fitness walk. Festive entertainment and costume contests will be a part of the after-race and awards party hosted by media sponsor 104-KRBE.
